Shim6: Multihoming for IPv6

Shim6 is a multihoming protocol that has been designed by the IETF to suit the requirements of the new version of IP, IPv6. Currently BGP is used to provide multihomed connectivity to sites, but this technique is already now responsible for part of the growth of the BGP routing tables, and it could be even worth with the very long IPv6 addresses. This presentation explains the motivations that led to the design of Shim6, and goes through its functional and security challenges. We conclude with some open research areas.

Separating identifiers from locators to scale the Internet

The growth of the Internet is causing some stress on the Internet control plane and BGP in particular. The IRTF Routing Research Group has been chartered to explore architectural alternatives to the current Internet routing architecture. Several of these alternatives rely on separating the identifier and locator roles of IP addresses. In this talk, we'll review the key principles of these proposals and explain the main challenges that need to be solved.

LinShim6 0.8 released

LinShim6 0.8 has been released.

LinShim6 is an implementation of the Shim6 protocol, that provides host-centric multihoming capabilities to IPv6.
The major new feature present in version 0.8 is the support for locator updates, that is, the peer is now informed when new locators become locally available.
More information here : http://inl.info.ucl.ac.be/LinShim6

LinShim6 - Implementation of the Shim6 protocol

LinShim6 is an implementation of the Shim6 protocol. This document is the most complete documentation for that work. It provides explanations for users, developers, and describes the whole architecture. Since LinShim6 is still evolving, this document is likely to be replaced from time to time with a more up to date version.

IDIPS : ISP-Driven Informed Path Selection

This draft describes a simple network-based protocol to facilitate Path Selection and to improve traffic engineering capabilities in multihomed corporate networks. With this protocol, any network device that requires to select a path among a list of different paths asks a Traffic Engineering service called IDIPS (ISP-Driven Informed Path Selection) to obtain an ordered list of the possible paths. The ordering is constructed according to policies and performance requirements of both the host and network provider.

The case for an informed path selection service

With today's peer-to-peer applications, more and more content is available from multiple sources. In tomorrow's Internet hosts will have multiple paths to reach one destination host with the deployment of dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 hosts, but also with new techniques such as shim6 or other locator/identifier mechanisms being discussed within the IRTF RRG. All these hosts will need to rank paths in order to select the best paths to reach a given destination/content.
