Improving the Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol

The Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) was proposed by Dino Farinacci and others to improve the scalability of the Internet architecture. However, the potential benefits of LISP can be much broader than this.

In this project, we both participate in the development of LISP and its standardisation within the IETF and we develop extensions to LISP.

Scaling the Internet with the Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP)

Title : Scaling the Internet with LISP

Abstract : During the last years, several solutions have been proposed to better scale the Internet. The Locator Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) proposed by Cisco is one of the solutions that has attracted most interest. In this talk, I'll present the current state of the LISP specification being discussed within the IETF and will explain the remaining issues and challenges.

LISP Mapping Versioning

This document describes the LISP Map-Versioning mechanism, which
provides in-packet information about EID-to-RLOC mappings used to
encapsulate LISP data packets. The proposed approach is based on
associating a version number to EID-to-RLOC mappings and transport
such a version number in the LISP specific header of LISP-
encapsulated packets. LISP Map-Versioning is particularly useful to
inform communicating xTRs about modifications of the mappings used to
encapsulate packets.

LISP-DHT: Towards a DHT to map identifiers onto locators

Recent activities in the IRTF (Internet Research Task Force),
and in particular in the Routing Research Group (RRG), fo-
cus on defining a new Internet architecture, in order to solve
scalability issues related to interdomain routing. The re-
systems' addressing space (the identifiers) and the routing
locators' space will alleviate the routing burden of the De-
level of indirection, implies the need of storing and distribut-

Interdomain Traffic Engineering in a Locator/Identifier Separation Context

The Routing Research Group (RRG) of the Internet Research Task Force
(IRTF) is currently discussing several architectural solutions to
build an interdomain routing architecture that scales better than the
existing one. The solutions family currently being discussed concerns the addresses
separation into locators and identifiers, LISP being one of them.
Such a separation provides opportunities in terms of traffic
engineering. In this paper, we propose an open and flexible solution
that allows an ISP using identifier/locator separation to engineer its

Separating identifiers from locators to scale the Internet

The growth of the Internet is causing some stress on the Internet control plane and BGP in particular. The IRTF Routing Research Group has been chartered to explore architectural alternatives to the current Internet routing architecture. Several of these alternatives rely on separating the identifier and locator roles of IP addresses. In this talk, we'll review the key principles of these proposals and explain the main challenges that need to be solved.
