Shim6: Multihoming for IPv6

Shim6 is a multihoming protocol that has been designed by the IETF to suit the requirements of the new version of IP, IPv6. Currently BGP is used to provide multihomed connectivity to sites, but this technique is already now responsible for part of the growth of the BGP routing tables, and it could be even worth with the very long IPv6 addresses. This presentation explains the motivations that led to the design of Shim6, and goes through its functional and security challenges. We conclude with some open research areas.

Preparing network configurations for IPv6 renumbering

The difficulty of renumbering a network — i.e., adding and removing an Internet Protocol (IP) prefix due to a provider change or a network merger — is a real issue for most network administrators. In this paper, we propose a set of macros that can be used in configuration files. These allow network administrators to write generic configurations that are independent of the public IPv6 prefixes allocated to their network.

LinShim6 0.8 released

LinShim6 0.8 has been released.

LinShim6 is an implementation of the Shim6 protocol, that provides host-centric multihoming capabilities to IPv6.
The major new feature present in version 0.8 is the support for locator updates, that is, the peer is now informed when new locators become locally available.
More information here : http://inl.info.ucl.ac.be/LinShim6

- NAT v4->v6->v4 an issue ? It is temporary and an incentive for full IPv6... and it's not worth than v4->v4->v4

IPv6 delay and loss performance evolution

The paper titled "IPv6 delay and loss performance evolution" written by Zhou et al. in the International Journal of Communication Systems proposes to analyze the performances of IPv6 paths compared to IPv4 paths between the same nodes.

The dataset is the RIPE database between the October 1st, 2003 and October 31th 2005. The principle is simple: process the RIPE database for the TTM boxes running both IPv4 and IPv6 and compare the performances in term of delay and loss ratio for the two protocols.

LinShim6 - Implementation of the Shim6 protocol

LinShim6 is an implementation of the Shim6 protocol. This document is the most complete documentation for that work. It provides explanations for users, developers, and describes the whole architecture. Since LinShim6 is still evolving, this document is likely to be replaced from time to time with a more up to date version.
